Back at Angel’s Keep, I passed the plastic bag to Major O’Brady to dispose of; it simply wasn’t a trophy that I wanted to keep. He took the bag as I held it out, but for some reason, I just didn’t let it go, and we paused for a moment with the severed hand hanging between us. My face suddenly betrayed me with its weakness and screwed up tight while I burst out in tears. The major was a caring man, but in a tough way, not cuddly, so he held himself while my emotional wave swept over us both.

“This was wrong,” I managed at last.

“He attacked you, and it was right that he be punished. A lessor Queen would have killed him. You have shown him leniency and mercy.”

“Look at us, John. We of all people know what it is like to lose limbs and have to cope. I could have given him this. I could have let him have his hand to be reattached.”

“You cut it off for a reason. It is something that once done should not be undone.”

I felt another welling of tears hit me. “I don’t know. Taking it from him afterwards was so stupid, so unnecessary. Would there still be time to get it back to him? How long could it stay viable for re-attachment?”

O’Brady thought for a second. “Three of four hours I believe. There is still a little time, but we’d have to contact the hospital and let them know it’s on its way. Is that what you want?”

I looked at the bag. Seeing the hand in there made me feel sick. “I don’t know,” I said simply. “I don’t know what I should do.”

I was feeling lost and worthless all of a sudden. I started thinking of how ugly I must be with my missing leg and how much more Giulia would prefer to lie with Francesca Dubois. That hand seemed to suddenly represent all my anger and bitterness and jealousy. “Disgusting,” I mumbled. “Everything is so confusing. So, complicated.”

I had a cherished wife, yet her head was being turned by a beautiful dancer. I had a slave I adored, but I seemed to have a budding relationship with an incorporeal enemy, whom I had doomed to follow me everywhere. I was a Queen, leading demons and vampires yet some of my friends were beginning to suspect I was the ‘antichrist’. A human (hemidemons are still basically humans) had just nearly killed me and yet I was confronting ancient deities of incredible power.

Angels don’t have doubts. Yeah, right: I was about to bring children into the world in the face of all this madness and uncertainty.

And what did a severed hand show? That I was strong? That I was weak? Was I losing the humanity I thought I’d gained when I had been cast down to Earth?

I was … “Disgusting.”

“Foul and filthy.” Cassandra chipped in.

“I don’t know what to do.”

The Major frowned. “Well, Ma’am, this is the kind of decision I can probably help you with.
